The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) strengthens national capacity and regional solidarity so that its 17 members can manage, control and develop their tuna fisheries. Collaborative work between OFP and the Forum Fisheries Agency and its members has intensified through the OFP's Forum Fisheries Agency liaison role. OFP supports FFA processes through scientific updates on the status of Pacific stocks, analysis of the potential impact of devised management options on future stock status, and the provision of timely scientific advice to answer specific requests. OFP scientific effort and study has supported the work of the Forum Fisheries Committee and its subsidiary bodies, which include:

  • The Management Options Consultation, which develops FFA member positions on regional management options for discussion at the WCPFC;
  • The Sub-committee on South Pacific Tuna and Billfish, whose activities relate to the sustainable management and development of fisheries targeting species that occur mostly below 10° South in latitude, in particular albacore. Members of the committee are Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
