The first Tuna Data Workshop (TDW-1) was one output of the Global Environment Facility’s Oceanic Fisheries Management Project (OFMP), which endeavors to support PICTs in the initial operational phases of the new Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC, see Figure 1). The project’s long-term aspirations are to improve both the information and knowledge on migratory fish resources of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) Warm Pool Large Marine Ecosystem; as well as aiming to improve the governance of those resources. The Japan Trust fund subsequently  recognised the value of these tuna data workshops and provided its encouragement and financial support for further workshops.

Tuna Data Workshop TDW17 , 17-21st April 2023

The regional Tuna Data Workshop is conducted on an annual basis for SPC member countries to improve their scientific tuna monitoring and data management capacity, and satisfy their data reporting obligations to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).

After few years of virtual meetings due to COVID-19, 2023 shows the return of in-presence Tuna Data Workshop, a full version of the regular TDW, which will be held from the 17th to the 21st of April.

Due to COVID-19 virus, 2022 marks the third electronic Tuna Data Workshop, a shortened version of the regular TDW, and will be held from the 6th to the 7th of April, Online (ZOOM video conference).
