Tuna Data Workshop #4
Friday, 03 December 2010 08:51

The regional Tuna Data Workshop is conducted on an annual basis for SPC member countries to improve their scientific tuna monitoring and data management capacity, and satisfy their data reporting obligations to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). The workshop is targeted to “National Tuna Data Coordinators (NTDC)”, which are the focal points for the coordination of tuna fishery data collection and management.

The Fourth Tuna Data Workshop (TDW-4) was held at SPC headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia from 26-30 April 2010 and included an agenda item on auditing tuna fisheries data collection systems. After an introductory presentation on the concepts of auditing fisheries data, participants were tasked with conducting an audit of a simulated port sampling programme using an audit workbook to guide them through the process (see photo).   This exercise was designed to show how audits could be conducted in their country to ensure continuous improvement in the quality of the data collected for tuna stock assessments.

The workshop also focused on the preparation of 2009 annual tuna catch estimates, which were due for submission to the WCPFC by the deadline of 30th April 2010, and a review of current data-related issues in the region, including the consequences for member countries’ data collection systems as a result of recent WCPFC decisions leading to the establishment of Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs). The workshop also included a session on the legal aspects of data collection and demonstrations of the latest tuna fishery database systems, which will be made available to member countries in the coming months.
