Pacific Islands Oceanic Fisheries Management Programme (OFMP)

The Oceanic Fisheries Management Project provides resources from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to governments in the Pacific Islands to strengthen management of their oceanic fisheries.
 
Pacific Islands receive assistance such as training, technical support, fisheries management, legal, compliance and scientific advice and assistance,  coordinated by regional organisations Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) in conjunction with the Pacific Community Oceanic Fisheries Programme (SPC) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
 

GOALS

Global environmental goal: “to achieve global environmental benefits by enhanced conservation and management of transboundary oceanic fishery resources in the Pacific Islands region and the protection of the biodiversity of the Western Tropical Pacific Warm Pool Large Marine Ecosystem”

Broad development goal: “assist the Pacific Island States to improve the contribution to their sustainable development from improved management of transboundary oceanic fishery resources and from the conservation of oceanic marine biodiversity”.

GEF PRIORITIES

  • IW1 - Catalyse financial resource mobilisation for implementation of reforms and stress reduction measures agreed through TDA-SAP or equivalent processes for particular transboundary systems
  • IW2 - Expand global coverage of foundational capacity building addressing the two key programme gaps and support for targeted learning, specifically the fisheries programme gapThe OFM Project sits within the GEF Programming Framework of the GEF IW OP 9, Integrated Land and Water Multiple Focal Area, SIDS Component

BENEFICIARIES

The Pacific small island developing beneficiary countries of the project include: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The countries are eligible for GEF assistance under paragrapgh 9(b) of the GEF Instrument.
