Information: Valerie is a marine biologist. She graduated in France in 1999 where she studied bottom deep-sea fish populations from the cold Eastern North Atlantic. She migrated to the tropics and joined SPC Fisheries and Ecosystem Monitoring and Analysis section in September 2000. She has been working since on the pelagic tuna ecosystem of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, focusing mainly on the food web study and on climate change impact. She started in 2001 the collaboration with the observer programmes of the region for the collection of biological samples which led to the creation of the Pacific Marine Specimen Bank (PMSB). She also contributed setting up a small laboratory at SPC in Noumea to analyse the pelagic fish stomach samples from the PMSB. Collaborating with many scientist from the region and outside she has also been involved in a number of studies on tuna and other top predators: ecosystem modelling (Ecopath), stable isotope, fat content, plastic and mercury analyses, seabirds, tuna bycatch, impact of seamounts, impact of climate change, micronekton, tuna tagging. Since 2011 she is involved is the organisation of scientific cruises in the region to monitor oceanography, phytoplankton, zooplankton and micronekton which sustain tuna production.
