The role of the Data Management section is to manage the collection, storage and dissemination of accurate and comprehensive scientific data for regional and national fisheries management authorities on fisheries targeting the region’s resources of tuna, billfish and other oceanic species.

FSM tuna fisheries database audited

An important activity planned as part of the SciCOFish project is the improvement and integration of national tuna fisheries databases, which includes conducting regular audits of national systems to ensure data quality is maintained.

A better overview of national fisheries

Bruno Deprez, as the SPC Fisheries Data Audit Officer, visited Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), from 6 to 16 March 2011 to conduct the first in-country data audit on the FSM National Oceanic Resource Management Authority (NORMA) database.

TUFMAN update in Tonga - 07/2010

In July 2010, one of the OFP Data Management staff visited Tonga Fisheries. During this travel, the TUFMAN was converted to latest version 6, and SQL server installed to support this newest TUFMAN version

During this visit, a quick demonstration was also made of a new and easy way to design a web site, using a Content Management System called "CMS made simple", which could possibly be used eventually for a redesign of the Fisheries web site.

 
Vanuatu attachment - 11/2010

In November 2010, Lucy Joy, National Tuna Data Coordinator from Vanuatu, followed several training sessions with various players of the OFP Data management team.

During this one week attachment, she was given :

  • an introduction to WCPFC Tuna Fisheries
  • training on Tuna Fisheries data collection, management and dissemination principles. She is now more familiar with the different types of data and the regional and national requirements.
  • training on database system such as the TUFMAN Database System or the Catch and Effort Query System (CES)
 
MIMRA testing TUBS - 06/2010

In June 2010, one of the OFP Data Management staff visited Marshall Islands Marine Resource Authorities (MIMRA). The goal of this travel was to convert the existing version of TUFMAN to the latest version 6. This newest version is based around SQL server, which was also installed on MIMRA servers.

In parallel, the latest alpha version of the Observer data entry system (TUBS) was also installed on MIMRA servers, in order to be tested by the team (Berry, Slam, James, Dike). Lots of precious feedback was collected from the team for further development of this software.
