The Stock Assessment and Modelling section within the Oceanic Fisheries Programme (OFP) undertakes a wide range of activities that meet Objective 1 of OFP's Strategic Plan, namely:

“To provide high-quality scientific information and advice for regional and national fisheries management authorities on the status of, and fishery impacts on, stocks targeted or otherwise impacted by regional oceanic fisheries”

Within the section, we have five areas of work which relate to the four result areas under the strategic plan.

Result 1.1: Regional oceanic fisheries management policy and decision-making by WCPFC are informed by the best science-based stock assessments and advice

This is achieved primarily through the Regional WCPO stock assessments that we undertake in our role as service provider to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), but inaddition we have active Research being undertaken into software for use with stock assessments and addressing many of the important issues in stock assessments.

Result 1.2: FFA’s oceanic fisheries management initiatives are supported by the best science-based stock assessments and advice

We work closely to support our sister agency the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) in providing analytical support for their Regional fisheries management initiatives. This are of work also involves support of subregional bodies such as the Office of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNAO) and Te Vaka Moana.

Result 1.3: National tuna oceanic fisheries policy and decision-making are informed by the best science-based stock assessments and advice

We work closely with National fisheries counterparts to provide scientific advice that assists them in the development of Tuna Management plans and other relevant fisheries management plans. A key part of this support is the development of National Tuna Fisheries Status Reports (NTFSRs).

Result 1.4: Enhanced capacity of SPC members to interpret stock assessment information and advice

We are currently providing dedicated capacity building of our members through several avenues. For four[?] years we have been running Stock Assessments Training Workshops (SAWs), we have attachments at SPC for national scientists (typically during the NTFSR process), and we provide in-meeting support, particularly for FFA and WCPFC meetings.
