WCPO Tuna Fishery Data Coverage

These tables provide an indication of the annual coverage for the main types of tuna fishery data held by the SPC-OFP. The SPC-OFP manage data that are provided directly to the SPC-OFP by their member countries and also manage data provided by WCPFC members (CCMs) and cooperating non-members (CNMs), with the SPC-OFP acting in the role of interim WCPFC data managers.

Annual coverage for each type of data is determined by comparing the sum of the target tuna species catch (in metric tonnes) for each type of data held at the SPC-OFP with the sum of the target tuna species ANNUAL CATCH ESTIMATES, which are available in the latest version of the WCFPC Tuna Fishery Yearbook.

The following target tuna species catches are used:

LONGLINE

ALBACORE, YELLOWFIN and BIGEYE

POLE-AND-LINE

SKIPJACK, YELLOWFIN and BIGEYE

PURSE SEINE

SKIPJACK, YELLOWFIN and BIGEYE

DRIFTNET

ALBACORE

TROLL

ALBACORE

Aggregate data listed in these tables represent aggregate data provided according the guidelines for the provision of scientific data to the WCPFC (i.e. a reporting obligation by CCMs and CNMs) ("Scientific Data to be Provided to the Commission", as revised by WCPFC4).

Logsheet (operational) data listed in these tables represent operational data provided by SPC members directly to SPC, and operational data provided according the guidelines for the provision of scientific data to the WCPFC (i.e. a reporting obligation by CCMs and CNMs).

Aggregate data may not have been provided by some countries, but would be available by aggregating their Logsheet (operational) data -  the following tables only list where aggregate data have been provided and usually provide better coverage than the logsheet (operational) data made available.

Unloadings, Port Sampling and Observer data are not specifically covered in the guidelines for the provision of scientific data to the WCPFC at this stage.
