The OFP Data Management Section manages the regional tuna fisheries databases which include the comprehensive data provided by SPC member countries. This section provides technical assistance and capacity building for establishing and developing tuna fishery data management systems for member countries.
In this key result area, the data management activities include : - Processing of tuna fishery data on behalf of member countries and territories, covering logsheet, port sampling, observer and unloadings data
- Data quality control checking of all types of tuna fishery data provided to SPC/OFP
- Provision of guidelines to establish and maintain standardized national data management systems, using best practice (see Regional Procedures template)
- Development and provision of tuna fishery database systems to facilitate data management in the offices of member countries and territories, the database systems include:
- TUFMAN
- CES
- TUBS
- OBSERVER TRIP VIEWER
- In-country and SPC-based attachment training for SPC member countries to enhance their skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- General overview of the WCPO tuna fisheries
- General fisheries data management concepts
- How to use the database systems provided...
- TUFMAN training resource material
- CES training resource material
- TUBS training resource material
- The preparation of various data summaries as an outcome of the training, including
- Summaries for Fisheries Division Annual Reports
- Summaries for the Scientific Committee (SC) National Fishery Report
- Summaries for bilateral access negotiation briefs
- Basic interpretation of the data summaries produced
- Review/audits of national data management systems
- Convening National and Regional Tuna Data Workshops to review issues in data management systems
- A secure facility on the OFP web site that provides summaries of tuna fishery data that can be accessed by each member country (see In-county tuna fishery data web pages)
- Analyses of fisheries data and provision of summarized data to member countries, as required
- Provision of technical advice to member countries with respect to any fisheries data management issue
